Tonga Juice

Just exactly what is Tonga Juice? Ah… well, its quite the story to be honest. See, back in 1994 I was working as a bartender on Cape Cod when a friend asked if I could get a day off and join her for this concert. I’m not a huge concert goer, but she promised it would be a day full of fun, rum and sun. Hey, sounds good to me! So the artist was this guy Jimmy Buffett.. ever hear of him? Ya, that guy! We roll in around 2pm and the parking lot is already packed and going crazy! Yep, I was hooked right away!

So year after year, I began to attend the shows (68 at the moment! had to update this!). I started out drinking margarita’s because that’s just what you did! Now keep in mind that you drink most of the day at a Buffett tailgate! The sour mix doesn’t do the tummy too much good so I started to add fresh watermelon to the mix. Figured it would take the sting out of the sour a bit and add some much needed water. A few more years go by and I’m finding that the watermelon just isn’t cutting it.

This is about the time that ‘Tonga Juice’ makes its appearance. I wanted to make a cocktail that I could sip on all day and not worry about my stomach for the next week. Cranberry juice is an obvious first ingredient (ok, after the rum!). It keeps you cleaned out and hydrated plus lots of great vitamins! Add to that some yummy pineapple juice for flaver (and ‘other’ positive attributes!) and gingerale for fizz (and good on your tummy!).

Viola! Tonga Juice!

I now make it in a very large water container. Think it holds about 8 gallons! I usually go through an entire container during one show.. or as in last weekend’s NE Parrothead Convention, 3 hours! Guess people like it! hehe…

If I want more of a kick, I add more rum… theres usually Captain, some Parrot Bay Coconut and sometimes some Parrot Bay Pinepple. Banana rum is a fabulous addition too!

So thats the deal with this crazy juice! I’ve been on the radio for the last three years because of Tonga (WZLX! Love them!), been interviewed for Radio Margaritaville and am pretty much known as ‘Tonga Tam’.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it….

Looks like you spent a little too much time out in the sun — you almost match the color of the bottle in your hand.

Or is the redness an undisclosed side effect of Tonga Juice?

ahaha… not a side effect! Just me and my stubborness to not wear sun lotion. Bad, I know… but I love my tan! :-)
